Why Family Involvement Changes Outcomes
The research on this is consistent: when families are actively engaged in the recovery process, loved ones are more likely to enter treatment, more likely to stay, and more likely to maintain their progress over time. Family involvement also measurably improves the wellbeing of the family members themselves.
The reason is structural, not sentimental. Addiction develops and is sustained within relationships. A person can complete a clinical program with every skill intact and still return to a home organized around the same patterns — enabling, conflict, and walking on eggshells — that fed the addiction for years. CRAFT changes the environment a person returns to, which is where recovery actually has to live.
